CASA HISTORY
Designer Wilbert Das's name was long associated with the highest levels of the Italian fashion and furnishing industries, but in recent years has gained new prominence for pioneering Trancoso's rustic-modern design movement, celebrated around the world for both its beauty and sustainable ethos.
Having worked beside local artisans since 2008 completing homes for UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa and several acclaimed projects for private clients, in 2017 Wilbert found a magical location and turned his attention to a special task, the creation of his own personal residence.
Casa Wilbert is set in an ultra-secluded 500 square meter garden of ancient trees and tropical flowers connected to UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa via a secret passage of sculpted river reeds. The hidden spot offers an intimate experience of Trancoso, with native families surrounding it on three sides while preserving absolute privacy including a rarity in the pedestrian-only Historic Quadrado neighborhood: two private parking spaces.
CASA DESIGN
This is bar none one of the most original and luxurious homes in all Bahia, conceived in the smallest detail to surprise and delight while providing every comfort imaginable.
Crafted of antique materials sourced from abandoned cacao plantations, the casa's relaxed atmosphere celebrates a tropical ideal of indoor / outdoor living, with a lake-like swimming pool, outdoor lounge and dining areas set beside a 33 meter hammock-filled veranda running the length of the casa. Large, vintage farmhouse windows look out upon some of the oldest trees in Trancoso while letting light and air flow freely, and distinctive bathrooms composed of striking, locally-made fixtures open up to private gardens.
Furnishings are one-of-a-kind pieces of the UXUA D.A.S. decor collection, including fabrics hand-spun on vintage looms, dyed with organic indigo and other natural pigments, some painted by Pataxó natives in spectacular, traditional geometric patterns. These original objects are complemented by artworks from Eder Oliveira, who in 2017 represented Brazil at the Venice International Biennale of Art, and the Dutch painter Machteld Schouten who composed a breathtaking wall mural recreating one of Brazil’s oldest nature watercolors dating to the 19th century.
